For over 10 years, the Batey Foundation has offered cross-cultural learning opportunities through week-long service programs in the Dominican Republic. Participants work hand-in-hand with local volunteers and leaders from batey communities in partnerships that build trusts, break down cultural divides, and forge lifelong friendships.
Service projects are conceived long before participants land in the DR. Our staff works with local leaders to identify and prioritize community needs, then select a project that will bring the greatest benefit to the local community. Past projects included: community centers, preschools, and a medical clinic.
The Batey Foundation partners with a local organization, Friends Around the World, to ensure we have the materials, expertise, and oversight needed to successfully carry out each project.
Our service programs are open to groups of all ages. Most often we partner with high schools and colleges.
Time in the DR isn’t all work. Each program includes opportunities to learn about the culture and history of the country from local leaders. History and Culture activities include: excursions to the history center of Santo Domingo, dance lessons, and trips to local markets.
