The Batey Foundation founded our Scholarship Program in 2016 and we now have 30 students enrolled. We created the program with the longterm goal to break the cycle of poverty by empowering youth living in the Bateye’s with educational assistance. Each year our Scholarship Program continues to support our students with the aim to continue their education on through University. In August, Leyri met with all of our students before the school year began, and distributed all the school supplies they need for the upcoming school year. The 2019-2020 school year has since begun for our students and throughout the year we will be highlighting our seniors who will be graduating at the end of the school year.
Since we started we have had two graduates move on from high school into University. Miokary our first graduate from the program is now studying Pediatric Medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD). Miokary’s “dream is to become a pediatric doctor so I can give back to the community. I know I won’t eradicate poverty, but I know I can help. If ten people die in our community, I want to be able to reduce that number.”
Liliana (pictured above) graduated from high school this past year! She is our second scholarship student to graduate from high school, and plans to attend UASD this winter following in the footsteps of Miokaris. Liliana wants “to be a beacon, a light for others as they were for me”. This commitment to community and continued education is what we aim for with all of our scholarship students.
